Pendulum Squat: Correct Form & Muscles Worked

Quads primary Pendulum Squat Machine Intermediate Compound · Legs

The pendulum squat machine uses a pivoting platform that creates a unique arc-based resistance curve — lighter at the bottom (where you're weakest) and heavier at the top. This makes it exceptionally quad-friendly and allows deep, controlled squatting with heavy loads.

How to Do the Pendulum Squat

  1. Step onto the pendulum squat platform. Place shoulders under the pads. Feet about shoulder-width on the platform.
  2. Release the safety. Stand to unrack the weight.
  3. Squat down by bending the knees. The pendulum arc creates a smooth, joint-friendly path. Go as deep as the machine allows.
  4. At the bottom, the load is at its lightest — this is the beauty of the pendulum design. Drive back up.
  5. The resistance increases as you rise. Squeeze at the top. Re-engage safety after your set.

Pendulum Squat Mistakes to Avoid

Feet too low on platform — same as hack squat, too low increases knee stress. Mid-platform is standard.
Not using the full range — the pendulum's accommodating resistance at the bottom REWARDS depth. Go as deep as the machine allows.
Locking out knees — stop short of full lockout, same as any machine squat.
Walking past this machine — if your gym has one, it's arguably the best machine for quad hypertrophy. The resistance curve matches your strength curve perfectly.

Pendulum Squat Muscles Worked

The pendulum squat targets the quads primarily through an arc-based resistance curve that's lighter at the bottom and heavier at the top. This matches the human strength curve, making it extremely joint-friendly while allowing heavy quad overload.

Pendulum Squat FAQ

Pendulum squat vs hack squat?
Pendulum has an arc-based path (lighter at bottom, heavier at top). Hack squat has a linear path (constant resistance ratio). Pendulum is generally more joint-friendly and feels smoother. Both are excellent quad machines.
Is the pendulum squat worth it?
If your gym has one, absolutely. The accommodating resistance curve is uniquely joint-friendly and allows very heavy quad loading without joint stress. Many bodybuilders consider it the best leg machine available.
How common are pendulum squat machines?
Less common than hack squats or leg presses. Mostly found in bodybuilding-focused gyms and well-equipped facilities. If yours has one, prioritize it.
Can pendulum squats replace barbell squats?
For quad hypertrophy, they're arguably better. For overall strength, athleticism, and core development, barbell squats are superior. Use pendulum squats as a primary quad hypertrophy tool alongside barbell squats for strength.
